Egypt have written a new chapter in their football history after securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand on Sunday.
The historic result puts the Pharaohs in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time ever, sparking excitement among Egyptian fans around the world.
New Zealand struck first in the Group G clash in Vancouver when Finn Surman headed home after just 15 minutes to give the Kiwis an early advantage.
However, Egypt responded positively and found their way back into the contest through Mostafa Zico, who equalised with a well-taken header.
With the game finely balanced, captain Mohamed Salah stepped up when it mattered most, combining brilliantly with Zico before curling a superb effort into the net to put Egypt ahead.
The Liverpool star later turned provider, setting up substitute Trezeguet to score Egypt’s third goal and seal a memorable victory.
The result moves Egypt to the top of Group G with four points and leaves them needing only a draw against Iran in their next match to book a place in the last 32.
Speaking after the game, Salah described the victory as a historic achievement and praised the passionate Egyptian supporters who turned out in large numbers.
“In years to come we will remember that this was one of the achievements in history,” Salah said.
The Egyptian captain also noted that the atmosphere inside the stadium felt like playing at home due to the strong support from fans.
Meanwhile, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw in the other Group G fixture, leaving Egypt in control of their qualification hopes.
