Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal as Manchester City defeated 10-man Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.
Haaland’s 60th-minute strike secured City’s fourth consecutive victory and strengthened their early position as one of the teams to watch in the title race.
Manchester United struggled to respond after going behind, with City’s disciplined defence successfully limiting the hosts as they searched for an equaliser.
The opening 45 minutes ended without a goal, although both sides had chances during an intense Manchester derby.
City came close in the 23rd minute through Phil Foden, but United managed to keep the visitors from breaking the deadlock before half-time.
City eventually found the breakthrough 15 minutes after the restart when Haaland converted in the 60th minute to put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead.
The Norway international’s goal forced United to take greater risks as they attempted to get back into the contest.
City, however, remained organised and controlled the game effectively, frustrating United’s attempts to create a clear opportunity in the final stages.
The encounter became more physical as the home side pushed for a leveller. Josko Gvardiol was booked in the 79th minute, before United’s Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire were also shown yellow cards in quick succession.
Despite their late efforts, United were unable to find a way through City’s defence, allowing the visitors to secure another clean-sheet victory.
The result represents another disappointing outing for United, who could not make home advantage count in one of the Premier League’s biggest fixtures.
For City, the victory further underlines their strong start to the campaign, with four wins from four matches putting them among the early contenders for another Premier League title.
United, meanwhile, will need to improve significantly if they are to compete consistently with their neighbours and the leading teams in the division.
