Frequent international travellers often look for visas that remain valid for several years, allowing them to make multiple trips without going through a fresh application process each time.
A 10-year visa, however, does not mean a traveller can remain in the country for an entire decade. The validity period determines how long the visa can be used for travel, while immigration authorities decide how long the visitor may stay during each trip.
For Nigerian travellers, the availability of 10-year multiple-entry visas varies from country to country. Some destinations offer the option to Nigerians, while others restrict long-term visas to nationals covered by specific reciprocal arrangements.
Here are six countries where 10-year multiple-entry visitor visas are documented, including the conditions that may apply to Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
- United Kingdom
Nigerians can apply for the UK Long-term Standard Visitor visa, which is offered with validity periods of two, five or 10 years.
A 10-year Standard Visitor visa allows the holder to make repeated visits during the period it remains valid. However, it does not permit someone to live in the UK for 10 years.
Visitors are generally allowed to remain in the country for up to six months on each visit.
Applicants must show that they have a genuine need to visit the UK regularly and satisfy the requirements for a Standard Visitor visa.
- Canada
Canada can issue multiple-entry visitor visas with validity of up to 10 years.
The exact validity period is determined by an immigration officer and may be shorter than 10 years. The visa can also expire earlier if factors such as the applicant’s passport or biometrics affect its validity.
A multiple-entry visa permits travellers to enter Canada repeatedly while the visa remains valid. Most visitors can stay for up to six months per visit, although a border services officer may authorise a different period.
For Nigerians: A 10-year visa is possible, but it is not automatically granted.
- Mexico
Mexico offers a Long-Term Visitor Visa that can remain valid for as long as 10 years.
The visa permits multiple entries, with each visit generally allowing a stay of up to 180 days.
The option is available to eligible foreign nationals who meet Mexico’s requirements. Categories can include frequent travellers, applicants who demonstrate sufficient financial resources, prominent individuals and certain relatives of Mexican citizens or residents.
For Nigerians: Potentially yes, provided the applicant satisfies the relevant requirements.
- Brazil
Brazil’s visitor visa framework allows validity of up to 10 years in situations where reciprocal arrangements apply.
According to Brazilian immigration rules, visitor visas are generally issued with shorter validity but may be extended to as much as 10 years where reciprocity between Brazil and the applicant’s country applies.
The 10-year validity is therefore not a standard option available to every foreign national.
For Nigerians: The applicable visa validity depends on Brazil’s reciprocity arrangements with Nigeria, so applicants should confirm the current rules with the Brazilian diplomatic mission before applying.
- United States — Not Currently for Nigerians
The United States is well known for issuing 10-year B1/B2 visitor visas to nationals of certain countries, but the duration depends on the nationality covered by the US visa reciprocity schedule.
For instance, citizens of countries such as China and Brazil can be eligible for 120-month, multiple-entry B1/B2 visas under the applicable reciprocity arrangements.
Nigerian nationals, however, currently have a different arrangement. The US reciprocity schedule lists B1, B2 and combined B1/B2 visas for Nigerians as single-entry visas with three months’ validity.
For Nigerians: No, not under the current reciprocity schedule.
- China — For Certain Nationalities
China also has reciprocal visa arrangements under which citizens of certain countries can receive long-term multiple-entry visas.
For example, agreements between China and the United States have provided for tourist and business visas with validity of up to 10 years for citizens of both countries. China and Canada have also had arrangements covering multiple-entry visas of up to 10 years for purposes including tourism, business and family visits.
The availability of a 10-year Chinese visa therefore depends on the applicant’s nationality and the applicable bilateral agreement rather than being a standard option for every foreign traveller.
For Nigerians: Eligibility for a 10-year multiple-entry visa depends on the applicable arrangement and should be confirmed with the relevant Chinese diplomatic mission.
A long-validity visa can make frequent international travel easier, but travellers should always check the current requirements and permitted length of stay before making travel plans, as visa policies and reciprocity arrangements can change.
