Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised Afrobeats superstar Davido for using his global platform at the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert to draw attention to Nigeria’s growing insecurity and the plight of abducted schoolchildren.
Davido made headlines after appearing on stage wearing a customised leather jacket featuring the names of pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, alongside a bold message on the back that read: “BRING THEM HOME.”
Reacting to the gesture, Obi described the singer’s actions as a patriotic move that went beyond entertainment and helped bring international attention to Nigeria’s security challenges.
In his words:
“Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation. He prominently displayed the names of schoolchildren who had been held captive for an extended period, advocating for their safe return. By utilizing his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment.”
Obi also argued that Nigeria’s security situation deserves greater global attention, stressing that the country’s leadership must do more to create an environment where young people can thrive.
The former Anambra governor further linked Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup to what he described as a failure of leadership rather than a lack of talent. He noted that while Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament, Nigerians continue to make their mark globally through music and by representing other nations on the football field.
“Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup, as I previously stated, stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” Obi said.
His comments come as Nigerian music stars Davido, Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr continue to gain global recognition through their involvement in the official activities surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
