Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has reacted strongly to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing his time in office as a failure and accusing the Labour Party of worsening the country’s problems.
Badenoch made the remarks in a statement shared on her official X account shortly after Starmer announced plans to step down as Prime Minister and Labour Party leader.
The Conservative leader criticised several key policies pursued under Starmer’s administration, including tax increases, welfare decisions, defence spending, energy policies and major political appointments.
According to Badenoch, the challenges facing Britain are not solely linked to Starmer’s leadership but are rooted in what she described as Labour’s overall political agenda.
“Britain is not ungovernable. Keir Starmer is a terrible Prime Minister. But the problem isn’t just Starmer.”
She argued that Labour’s approach to taxation and welfare had negatively impacted economic growth and accused the party of prioritising higher public spending over productivity.
Badenoch also used the opportunity to promote the Conservative Party, insisting it remains the best alternative for rebuilding the British economy and creating jobs.
“We need to get Britain working again. We need the Conservatives.”
Starmer announced his resignation on Monday after less than two years in office, citing the need for new leadership ahead of the next general election.
The outgoing Prime Minister said the process of choosing a new Labour leader would begin in July, while he would remain in office until a successor is selected.
His resignation has already triggered political reactions across the United Kingdom, with attention now shifting to the race to replace him.
