Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has said that promoting peace and national unity has remained his primary focus since leaving office in 1999.
Abdulsalami made the remark in Abuja during events marking his 84th birthday and the public presentation of three books, including his autobiography.
The former military leader recalled that when he assumed office in 1998 following the death of General Sani Abacha, he promised Nigerians a return to democratic rule and fulfilled that commitment by handing over power to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999.
“Leadership is not about power but about responsibility, and the best way to lead is to serve with integrity,” he said.
Commitment To Peace And Nation-Building
Abdulsalami said his departure from public office did not mark the end of his service to Nigeria, noting that peacebuilding has remained central to his efforts over the years.
According to him, lasting national development cannot be achieved without peace, dialogue, and justice.
He highlighted some of his contributions to conflict resolution and nation-building, including the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies, which focuses on research, mediation, and peace initiatives across Nigeria and Africa.
Role Of The National Peace Committee
The former Head of State also spoke about the role of the National Peace Committee, which he chairs, in promoting peaceful elections and political stability in Nigeria.
He noted that the committee has continued to engage political leaders, civil society groups, and security agencies to encourage dialogue and reduce tensions during election periods.
Abdulsalami added that his belief that peace is built through justice and understanding continues to guide his activities and vision for the country.
The elder statesman reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote national unity, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development.
