The Kano State Censorship Board has announced an immediate ban on activities popularly known as “after-party” and “hot challenge” at weddings and other social events held in event centres across the state.
The directive was announced on Saturday by the Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, in a statement issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sulaiman.
According to the board, the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to regulate the activities of event centres, masters of ceremony (MCs) and other stakeholders involved in organising social events in Kano State.
The board said the growing popularity of the activities is linked to what it described as a Western cultural practice that is gradually being introduced into wedding celebrations in the state.
“The attention of the board has been drawn to the growing trend of this activity, which is considered a Western cultural practice increasingly introduced into wedding celebrations in the state,” the statement said.
It explained that the suspension is aimed at protecting the cultural, moral and religious values of the people of Kano State.
The board noted that it is not against entertainment at weddings and other ceremonies, provided such activities are conducted responsibly and remain consistent with the state’s cultural traditions and religious teachings.
It also directed event centres, MCs, event planners and other organisers to comply fully with the new directive, warning that anyone found violating the order could face legal sanctions under the state’s laws.
In addition, residents were urged to report any event centre or MC found organising or promoting the banned activities within Kano State.
