State Threatens Sanctions, Prosecution Over Illegal Posters And Advertisements
The Enugu State Government has warned residents, businesses and advertisers against the defacement and illegal use of bus shelters and public transport infrastructure across the state.
The warning was issued by the Enugu State Ministry of Transport in a statement released on Saturday through the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Chinwendu Odumegwu.
According to the ministry, the destruction, misuse or unauthorised placement of posters, stickers, banners and advertisements on public transport facilities has become a growing concern that the government will no longer tolerate.
The statement stressed that the newly constructed bus shelters and transport infrastructure were built through major government investment aimed at creating a cleaner, safer, more organised and modern transportation system for residents of the state.
The ministry expressed concern over the increasing trend of individuals and organisations pasting posters, handbills and other promotional materials on bus shelters and related public structures without approval.
Authorities described such actions as illegal, unacceptable and harmful to the state’s environmental and urban development goals.
The government therefore directed that no individual, business, organisation or advertiser should place posters, stickers, banners, public notices or any form of advertisement on bus shelters or transport infrastructure without official approval from the Ministry of Transport.
The ministry warned that anyone caught damaging, defacing or illegally using public transport facilities would face strict sanctions including heavy fines and possible legal action.
According to the statement, enforcement teams have already been deployed to monitor transport infrastructure across the state and ensure full compliance with the directive.
The government explained that the move forms part of its wider behavioural change campaign designed to encourage civic responsibility, environmental cleanliness, orderliness and proper respect for public property.
The ministry further noted that the continued defacement of public infrastructure increases maintenance and cleaning costs while also damaging the visual appearance and modern image the state is trying to build.
The government therefore appealed to residents and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at protecting and preserving public assets for the benefit of everyone.
The statement concluded by urging residents to work together in keeping Enugu clean, orderly and beautiful.
