Sokoto PDP Dismisses Alleged Sack by Wike-Led Faction
The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with the Tanimu Turaki group, has firmly rejected claims of its suspension by a faction reportedly led by former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, describing the move as invalid and without constitutional backing.
The state leadership, headed by Chairman Alhaji Muhammadu Bello Goronyo, maintained that the purported dissolution of the executive committee holds no legal weight, stressing that the current leadership remains fully in charge of party affairs in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Sokoto on Wednesday, Goronyo emphasized that the party structure in the state was established through a legitimate electoral process and cannot be arbitrarily dismantled.
“A political party operates within the framework of the law. We were duly elected into office, and our tenure is clearly defined. There has been no violation on our part that would justify any form of suspension or removal,” he stated.
He further clarified that the current executive committee was elected in October 2024 for a four-year term, which is expected to run until October 2028. According to him, only a competent court of law has the authority to terminate their mandate before the expiration of their tenure.
Goronyo also revealed that the leadership first became aware of the alleged suspension through reports circulating on social media, which claimed that a caretaker committee had been constituted to replace the existing executives in Sokoto State.
Despite the development, he insisted that the party leadership in the state remains undeterred and committed to carrying out its responsibilities.
“As far as we are concerned, we are still in charge and fully executing the mandate given to us by party members. We will not be distracted by actions that are not grounded in the law,” he added.
He also disclosed that the executive committee is considering its next line of action, including possible legal steps, to challenge what it described as an unconstitutional and politically motivated decision.
“As responsible and law-abiding citizens, we will carefully review the situation and take appropriate measures that align with the laws of the land,” Goronyo noted.
It would be recalled that the Wike-aligned faction of the PDP recently announced the dissolution of the Sokoto State Executive Committee and the appointment of a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.
The newly announced caretaker committee is said to be headed by Hon. Hayatu Tafiya as chairman, with Alhaji Ahmed S. Pawa serving as secretary. The directive outlining the dissolution and new appointments was reportedly issued in a letter dated April 27, 2026, and signed by Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, identified as the National Publicity Secretary of the faction.
However, the Sokoto PDP leadership has dismissed the move in its entirety, reiterating its legitimacy and vowing to explore all lawful avenues to defend its mandate.
