Mohammed Hayatu-Deen has officially declared his bid for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), setting the stage for what could be a competitive race ahead of the 2027 elections.
Having joined the party on April 12, Hayatu-Deen is expected to contest alongside notable figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi—all reportedly eyeing the same ticket.
Speaking during a national TV interview, the former banker positioned himself as a candidate of both empathy and experience, stressing that Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges require steady, practical leadership. He called on ADC members to stay united, describing cohesion as the party’s strongest advantage going into the elections.
Hayatu-Deen highlighted his four decades of experience across public and private sectors, including economic reform efforts, investment drive, and institutional turnaround. He also pointed to his national honour, the Order of the Niger (OON), awarded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as his role in the 2015 economic transition under Muhammadu Buhari.
Addressing key national issues, he raised concerns over rising food and fuel prices, worsening insecurity, and the weakening naira, noting that many Nigerians are struggling to cope with daily living.
Framing his ambition as a response to these challenges, he promised a practical approach focused on economic stability, improved security, and rebuilding public trust.
“This is not the Nigeria we deserve,” he said. “It’s time to change course.”
