South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has explained why Bafana Bafana crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting his team could not match Canada’s physical strength and pace in their Round of 32 defeat.
Speaking after South Africa’s heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the tournament co-hosts in Los Angeles, the experienced Belgian coach said the difference between both teams went beyond technical ability.
“I have said many times that modern football is more than just technique. There is power and speed, and we do not have it in our team yet. Canada had those qualities,” Broos said.
South Africa’s impressive World Cup journey came to an end after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send Canada into the Round of 16.
Before the tournament, the 74-year-old had announced plans to retire from coaching after the World Cup to spend more time with his family.
“I want to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren,” he had said.
However, following the painful defeat, Broos hinted that he may reconsider that decision.
“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed, so I will not do it here,” he said.
Reports suggest the South African Football Association could retain Broos either as head coach or in another technical role after his impressive work with the national team.
Since taking charge in 2021, Broos has transformed South African football, leading Bafana Bafana to their first World Cup appearance in 16 years and guiding the team into the knockout stage for the first time in history.
While South Africa’s World Cup campaign has ended, Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16.
