Iran has announced the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, accusing Israel of violating a ceasefire agreement through continued military operations in Lebanon.
The move comes just days after Iran agreed to reopen the vital shipping route as part of a US-brokered deal aimed at ending the wider Middle East conflict.
According to Iranian authorities, the decision was triggered by fresh Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which Tehran described as a breach of the agreement reached with the United States.
“The Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic,” Iran’s military command declared.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, handling a significant portion of global oil and gas exports. Any disruption in the waterway often sends shockwaves through international energy markets.
The latest development follows renewed clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters despite a recently announced ceasefire.
Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes and ground operations continued in parts of southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah accused Israel of violating the truce.
The growing tensions have also affected diplomatic efforts, with planned talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland reportedly postponed indefinitely.
Observers fear the latest escalation could further complicate efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement in the region.
