The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out a national digital postcode system aimed at improving security, emergency response, and public service delivery across Nigeria.
The initiative, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the National Digital Addressing Policy, will assign every location in the country a unique and verifiable digital address.
Speaking at the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop in Abuja, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the project would provide a reliable framework for identifying locations nationwide.
According to the minister, the first phase of the rollout is expected to begin in October, with several states set to be covered before the end of the year.
“The first set of locations, areas, and states will be released in October this year, and I’m pushing them hard to ensure that we cover a significant number of states before the end of the year,” Tijani said.
He explained that the digital postcode system would create a trusted location database capable of supporting security operations, emergency services, logistics, e-commerce, and government planning.
“The future we are building is one where every incident, every facility, every operation, and every response in Nigeria is anchored on a single, trusted location layer,” he stated.
Tijani added that improved location identification would enhance coordination, accountability, and the speed of emergency responses across the country.
Also speaking at the event, Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi, said poor addressing systems have long affected investigations, intelligence gathering, emergency response, and public service delivery.
She explained that the new digital postcode system would provide trusted location intelligence by assigning every address a GIS-enabled code that can be verified by multiple institutions.
“The Digital Postcode provides trusted location intelligence, the critical layer that allows people, assets, services, and institutions to be accurately located and connected,” Odeyemi said.
The government believes the initiative will play a key role in strengthening national security while supporting Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.
