Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that preparations for the 2027 elections will not interfere with the legislative responsibilities of members of the National Assembly.
Akpabio said political campaigns and legislative duties were separate responsibilities, insisting that lawmakers would continue working throughout the election period.
He spoke with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, after recently meeting APC critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District.
At the meeting, President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno received endorsements for another term in office in 2027.
According to Akpabio, lawmakers were elected to serve for four years and would remain committed to their responsibilities despite the upcoming political activities.
“We were elected for four years and we are going to work for four years.”
He explained that campaigns could be scheduled around legislative activities, noting that politicians would not all be campaigning at the same time because they belong to different political parties.
Akpabio maintained that the approaching election would not prevent the National Assembly from passing laws and addressing the needs of Nigerians.
“Nothing will affect legislation. We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people.”
