The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of nine bodies along the Wawa-Lumma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were suspected to have been killed by bandits while travelling along the route, raising fresh concerns over the safety of commuters in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday.
According to the police spokesman, security agencies were alerted on Tuesday after the bodies were discovered along the road.
Following the report, police and military tactical teams were deployed to the area to secure the scene and recover the bodies.
Security Teams Intensify Operations
SP Abiodun said the bodies were subsequently evacuated from the area by the security teams.
He added that clearance operations had been intensified along the Wawa-Lumma Road and surrounding communities as security agencies work to prevent further attacks.
The police said the ongoing operation is also aimed at securing the route and restoring confidence among travellers who regularly use the road.
The incident has heightened concerns over the security situation along the Wawa-Lumma axis, particularly the vulnerability of motorists and other travellers to attacks.
Security agencies are expected to sustain patrols and clearance operations in the area as efforts continue to prevent further loss of lives.
