Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said he will not become a political godfather who controls the affairs of his successor after leaving office in 2027.
Makinde stated this on Monday while hosting members of the Muslim community at a Hijrah 1448 luncheon at the Government House in Ibadan.
The governor said after completing his eight-year tenure, he would ensure a smooth transition and allow whoever succeeds him to lead the state without undue interference.
“I won’t be a political godfather to my successor,” Makinde said.
He explained that his successor should have the freedom to develop and implement policies based on the needs and aspirations of the people.
“The essence of political leadership should not be the ability to control those who come after a public office holder, but the willingness to serve humanity and leave behind institutions and structures that can continue to benefit the people,” he said.
Makinde also urged voters ahead of the 2027 elections to assess political candidates based on their competence, character and commitment to public service, rather than ethnicity, religion or other considerations.
“Leadership should be about service to humanity, not about control,” the governor said.
He called on voters to examine what candidates had achieved, what they could offer and whether they genuinely had the interests of the people at heart.
Makinde assured residents that his administration would remain focused on delivering projects and consolidating its achievements until the end of his tenure.
“Until the expiration of this administration, we will continue to make decisions and take actions that will promote development, peace and prosperity in Oyo,” he said.
The governor thanked residents for their support over the past eight years and appreciated the Muslim community for its contributions to the development and stability of the state.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every section of Oyo State feels included in governance.
