Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 10 students and teachers abducted during an attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on a secondary school in Lassa Community, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The victims were kidnapped on Monday morning while final-year students were writing the National Examination Council (NECO) examination at the Technical Secondary School in the community.
According to the military, troops immediately launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation after receiving reports of the attack. The mission was supported by fighter jets and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI.
The security team tracked the attackers to the Daggu area, where troops engaged them in a fierce gun battle. Following the operation, 10 abducted victims were successfully rescued unharmed and are currently receiving care, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining captive.
During the operation, troops inflicted heavy casualties on the fleeing terrorists and recovered seven motorcycles used during the attack, disrupting their escape.
The military, however, confirmed that one soldier of Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire. Their sacrifices were described as a reflection of the commitment of security personnel working to restore peace across the North-East.
Authorities said security operations have since been intensified in the area, with additional measures put in place to protect schools, vulnerable communities and other public institutions from further attacks.
The military also noted that the latest incident highlights the increasing desperation of terrorist groups as sustained military offensives continue to weaken their operations. It reassured residents that troops remain committed to defeating insurgents and safeguarding lives and property.
Members of the public were urged to remain vigilant, provide credible information to security agencies and rely only on official updates regarding ongoing security operations.
