WhatsApp is set to introduce a new username feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, marking a major privacy upgrade for the messaging platform.
The Meta-owned app announced that users will soon be able to create unique usernames, making it easier to chat with friends, family and businesses while keeping their personal phone numbers private.
According to the company, the update is designed to improve user privacy, especially in situations such as joining large group chats or messaging someone for the first time, where phone numbers are currently visible.
WhatsApp also explained that there will be no public username directory or search suggestions, meaning users will only be able to contact someone if they know the person’s exact username.
With more than three billion users worldwide, the company acknowledged that not everyone will get their preferred username. To manage this, username reservations will be introduced gradually across different countries over the coming months.
In addition, content creators, businesses and organisations will have the opportunity to reserve the same usernames they already use on Facebook or Instagram, helping them maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms.
WhatsApp said users will be notified once the feature becomes available in their region.
