As the world marks World Sickle Cell Day, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged Nigerians to work together in tackling the challenges faced by people living with sickle cell disorder.
The Anambra First Lady stressed that fighting the disease goes beyond medical treatment and requires greater awareness, compassion, support and informed health decisions.
In a message released to commemorate the global awareness day, Dr. Soludo called on individuals, families, healthcare providers and policymakers to play active roles in reducing the impact of the condition across the country.
According to her, many people living with sickle cell disease continue to face health, social and emotional challenges that deserve urgent attention.
She encouraged Nigerians to embrace early testing and seek proper medical guidance, noting that informed decisions can help reduce the burden of the disease and improve outcomes for patients.
Dr. Soludo also highlighted the importance of expanding access to quality healthcare services, especially for individuals affected by the disorder.
The First Lady, who leads the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, said society must continue supporting sickle cell warriors and their families while working towards a future where no one is disadvantaged because of a health condition.
Her message coincided with the 2026 World Sickle Cell Day theme, “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease,” which focuses on improving care, reducing inequalities and supporting better health outcomes for patients worldwide.
She also paid tribute to individuals living with the condition, describing them as resilient fighters who deserve continuous encouragement and support.
