Argentina captain Lionel Messi has spoken publicly following his side’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting that the pain of losing will take time to overcome.
In an emotional message shared on Instagram, the 39-year-old reflected on Argentina’s journey and thanked his teammates and supporters despite the disappointing result.
“The pain is immense, and it’s going to take a long time for this wound to heal,” Messi wrote.
He also urged fans to remember the team’s achievements, noting that Argentina reached back-to-back World Cup finals after winning the 2022 title.
“I’ll also hold on to all the good memories. Today it’s hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” he added.
Messi also congratulated Spain on lifting the trophy after a hard-fought final.
The Inter Miami star, who scored eight goals during the tournament, was unable to inspire Argentina in the final as Spain secured victory through Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner.
With the defeat, Messi’s World Cup record now stands at one title (2022) and two final defeats (2014 and 2026).
Reports in Argentina also suggest the football legend is not expected to return to Buenos Aires with the rest of the squad following the painful loss.
