Kylian Mbappe has etched his name deeper into French football history after becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer in a 3-1 victory over Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The France captain achieved the milestone on Tuesday, scoring twice to guide Les Bleus to a winning start in their Group I campaign and surpassing the long-standing record previously held by Olivier Giroud.
Mbappe entered the tournament with 56 international goals and needed two more strikes to break the record. The Real Madrid star delivered when it mattered most, finding the net in the 66th minute before adding another brilliant goal deep into stoppage time.
His two goals took his tally to 58 for France, moving him ahead of Giroud’s 57-goal record and cementing his place as the country’s highest goalscorer of all time.
The 27-year-old had faced significant pressure heading into the tournament, but his performance against Senegal showed exactly why he remains one of the biggest stars in world football.
Former France striker Olivier Giroud was among the first to congratulate Mbappe on the historic achievement.
“Congrats, Kylian. You made it. I’m really happy for him,” Giroud said.
Giroud also disclosed that Mbappe had promised to gift him the jersey he wore during the record-breaking match.
With the victory secured, France will now shift attention to their next Group I fixture against Iraq in Philadelphia before wrapping up the group stage against Norway on June 26.
For Mbappe, however, the night belonged to history as he became the new king of goals for the French national team.
