President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, following the country’s 24-medal finish at the international sporting event.
Nigeria concluded the competition with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, a performance the President described as a reflection of the athletes’ resilience, discipline and unwavering determination.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the athletes, coaches and officials for representing the country with pride and honour throughout the Games.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended the dedication of the coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and everyone who contributed to Nigeria’s participation in the Games.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible,” he added.
The President described the team’s 24-medal haul as evidence of their hard work and perseverance, expressing confidence that the experience gained in Glasgow would prepare them for even greater achievements at future international competitions.
He further applauded the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their efforts in supporting Nigerian athletes and promoting sports development across the country.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports by improving training facilities, strengthening sporting institutions and creating more opportunities for talented athletes to compete successfully on the global stage.
“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage,” he stated.
The President also encouraged Team Nigeria to remain focused and continue striving for excellence as they prepare for future international competitions.
Team Nigeria finished the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals, made up of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. Although the performance was widely praised, it fell short of Nigeria’s outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country topped the African medals table with 35 medals comprising 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
Nigeria also won 24 medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, while the country’s best recent performance came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Team Nigeria secured 36 medals, including 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze.
