United States President Donald Trump has announced that a peace agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving Iran is expected to be signed on Sunday, a move he says will lead to the immediate reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed confidence that the agreement would help restore stability in the region and ease pressure on global trade and energy markets. He stated that the waterway would be reopened to international shipping as soon as the deal is signed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, making any development surrounding its reopening significant for global oil prices and international commerce.
However, Iran appeared to cast doubt on Trump’s timeline. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reportedly said the agreement would not be signed on Sunday, although he acknowledged that a deal could still be reached in the coming days.
Trump also disclosed that the proposed agreement includes plans to address Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium. According to him, the material would eventually be secured and destroyed as part of broader efforts to prevent the development of nuclear weapons.
While expressing optimism about the negotiations, the U.S. president warned that failure to comply with the agreement could lead to tougher actions from Washington. He nevertheless stated that he hopes the process will proceed smoothly and pave the way for improved relations between the United States, Iran, and the wider Middle East.
Despite the positive signals, uncertainties remain as officials from both sides continue discussions over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and the final terms of the agreement.
