Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.) for his role in restoring democracy in Nigeria, describing him as one of the country’s most selfless and patriotic leaders.
Jonathan made the remarks in Abuja during the public presentation of three books launched in honour of Abdulsalami as part of activities marking his 84th birthday.
According to the former president, Abdulsalami demonstrated uncommon courage by willingly handing over power and guiding Nigeria back to democratic rule at a time when many military leaders would have chosen to remain in office.
“With so many well-ironed khaki people around you with assault rifles, it took courage to say no to power,” Jonathan said.
‘He Stabilised Democracy In Nigeria’
Jonathan said if any individual deserves credit for helping to stabilise democracy in Nigeria, it is Abdulsalami Abubakar, who served as Head of State from June 1998 to May 1999 before handing over to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He noted that Abdulsalami’s decision to oversee a peaceful transition to civilian rule remains one of the most significant moments in the country’s democratic history.
The former president also appeared to contrast Abdulsalami’s actions with those of another former leader who, according to him, chose not to leave power when the opportunity arose, leading to negative consequences for the country.
A Legacy Beyond Office
Jonathan described Abdulsalami as a rare statesman whose influence extends far beyond the office he once occupied.
He said the retired general’s life reflects humility, integrity, patriotism, and dedication to national service, adding that his contributions continue to inspire future generations.
Beyond his time in government, Jonathan commended Abdulsalami’s work as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, noting that he has remained actively involved in promoting peaceful elections, national unity, conflict resolution, and democratic stability both within and outside Nigeria.
He added that the three books unveiled in Abdulsalami’s honour would help preserve important leadership lessons and document a critical chapter in Nigeria’s history.
