The Osun State Police Command has dismissed widespread claims on social media suggesting that suspected bandits were recently arrested in parts of the state, describing the reports as misleading and inaccurate.
The clarification comes after videos circulated online alleging that security operatives had apprehended bandits in Osogbo and Imesi-Ile, sparking concern among residents.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the individuals involved were not connected to banditry as widely claimed.
Speaking through the Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan explained that one of the suspects, arrested along the Lameco–Oke-Fia Road in Osogbo, was initially flagged by members of the public due to suspicious items found in his possession.
Items recovered reportedly included a knife, an army camouflage trouser, charms and clothing materials. However, during questioning, investigators observed signs suggesting the man was battling mental health challenges.
Further checks identified him as 38-year-old Adebayo Sunday. Family members later confirmed his identity, while a traditional healer reportedly informed police that he had treated the man for a mental-related condition several years ago. He was subsequently referred for specialist medical evaluation.
In a separate case that also generated public attention, police clarified that three men arrested in Imesi-Ile were not bandits but cattle rearers who have lived in the community for nearly two decades.
Investigators said the matter stemmed from a farmland dispute that resulted in allegations of malicious damage. Community leaders reportedly confirmed that the men and their families had coexisted peacefully with residents for many years.
Police added that the complainants later opted for an amicable settlement and formally withdrew the case.
The Command has now urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information online, warning that false reports can create unnecessary fear, panic and tension within communities.
Authorities also stressed the importance of allowing security agencies to complete investigations before conclusions are drawn on sensitive security matters.
