The music industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian-British singer and songwriter Talay Riley, who was reportedly stabbed to death in East London at the age of 35.
Talay, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was attacked on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown, East London, on Friday morning. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have since launched a murder investigation, with homicide detectives from the specialist crime command working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional statement, describing his passing as a devastating loss to both loved ones and the music community.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
While many fans knew him for his musical achievements, his family said those closest to him would remember his humour, generosity, and vibrant personality.
“For those that knew and loved him personally, it is his humour, generous spirit and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most,” the statement added.
Talay enjoyed a successful music career spanning more than a decade and was widely respected within the R&B industry.
He first entered the music scene as a teenager after signing a publishing deal and later rose to prominence through collaborations with some of the biggest names in music.
Throughout his career, he worked with artists including Usher, Trey Songz, Skepta, Kehlani, H.E.R., Khalid, and several other international stars.
Following news of his death, tributes flooded social media from friends, colleagues, and fans around the world.
Among those paying tribute was his younger brother, renowned music producer Scribz Riley, who shared an emotional message reflecting on their final conversation.
“My heart is shattered. This doesn’t feel real. Just before he went to sleep we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation,” he wrote.
He described Talay as more than just a brother, calling him a mentor, inspiration, and a source of light to many people.
“Even with everything you accomplished, this was far too soon. I love you brother. Thank you for everything. Rest in paradise Yinka,” Scribz added.
Several music stars also reacted to the tragedy, with rapper Stormzy expressing condolences, while singer Craig David remembered Talay’s positive energy and impact on those around him.
As investigations continue, fans and fellow musicians have continued to celebrate Talay Riley’s legacy and contributions to the global music industry.
