The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called on men across Nigeria to stop carrying emotional burdens alone and begin prioritising their mental and emotional well-being.
Speaking as part of activities marking Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the Anambra First Lady said many men have been conditioned over the years to hide their struggles, suppress emotions and endure hardships in silence.
According to her, true strength is not measured by suffering alone but by the courage to seek help, speak openly and protect one’s mental health.
“For generations, many men have been taught to carry their burdens in silence, suppress emotions and equate strength with enduring pain alone. Yet true strength also lies in speaking up, seeking support and prioritising emotional and mental well-being,” she said.
The founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo stressed the need for families and communities to create safe spaces where men can freely express themselves without fear of judgment or stigma.
She noted that mental health remains a crucial aspect of overall well-being and should never be seen as a sign of weakness.
“Mental health is not a sign of weakness; it is an essential part of overall health,” Soludo stated.
Encouraging men to take better care of themselves, she urged them to rest when necessary, maintain meaningful connections and seek support whenever they feel overwhelmed.
“To every man striving, fighting, providing, leading and navigating life’s challenges, your well-being matters. Take time to rest, connect, seek support and care for your mind just as you care for your body,” she added.
Her remarks come amid growing concerns by mental health advocates over the increasing number of men battling emotional and psychological challenges in silence due to societal expectations and cultural pressures.
Experts have repeatedly called for more awareness, support systems and open conversations around men’s mental health, warning that stigma continues to discourage many from seeking professional help.
