The football community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian forward Victor Udoh, who reportedly died at the age of 21 under unclear circumstances.
According to reports by The Mirror UK, the young footballer was found dead in Abuja, although authorities have yet to officially confirm the exact cause of his death.
The heartbreaking news has shocked fans and former teammates, especially as Udoh was widely seen as one of Nigeria’s promising young talents in Europe.
Royal Antwerp, one of his former clubs, confirmed his death in an emotional statement shared on the club’s official X account on Tuesday.
The Belgian club described the news as devastating and paid tribute to the striker’s contributions during his time with the team.
“With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the statement read.
The club recalled how Udoh joined the Young Reds during the 2023/2024 season and impressed with 12 goals in 21 matches before making his debut for the senior team.
Royal Antwerp also extended condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, praying for strength during the painful period.
“Rest in peace, Victor,” the club added.
Before his death, Udoh had recently returned to Nigeria after ending his stay with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice.
The striker previously signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with English side Southampton after leaving Royal Antwerp, though he later exited the club by mutual consent in search of regular playing time.
Before moving abroad, he played for Abuja-based Hypebuzz, where he first gained attention for his talent and potential.
Reacting emotionally to the news, Udoh’s former teammate and ex-Watford midfielder Pierre Dwomoh revealed he initially struggled to believe the reports until family members confirmed the tragedy.
“At first you think something like this happens in your sleep… until you realise it’s real,” he wrote on Instagram.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not officially released details surrounding the circumstances of Udoh’s death.
His passing has since sparked an outpouring of grief online, with many football fans mourning a career that ended far too soon.
