A police officer lost his life on Sunday after a Lexus vehicle allegedly rammed into the motorcycle he was riding on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
Two other persons were also hospitalised in a separate crash along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The incidents were confirmed in separate statements issued by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to LASTMA, the fatal accident on the Third Mainland Bridge occurred after a Lexus car collided with a police officer riding a Bajaj motorcycle on the bridge, where motorcycles are prohibited.
The officer reportedly died on the spot from injuries sustained in the crash.
Taofiq disclosed that the driver of the Lexus vehicle later turned himself in at the Adekunle Police Division shortly after the incident.
He added that LASTMA officials and police officers quickly responded to the scene to prevent further accidents and manage traffic around the affected area.
Emergency evacuation and vehicle recovery operations were also carried out to restore normal traffic flow on the bridge.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and drive responsibly.
He stressed the importance of caution, speed control and adherence to road safety rules to reduce avoidable accidents and fatalities across Lagos State.
Meanwhile, in another accident along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, a driver and his female passenger sustained serious injuries after their Lexus Jeep reportedly plunged into a bushy canal.
According to LASTMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver became distracted while using a mobile phone behind the wheel, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
The vehicle reportedly veered off the expressway before somersaulting into the canal.
Taofiq stated that excessive speeding also contributed to the crash.
The driver reportedly suffered severe internal injuries, while the female passenger sustained a fracture in her left arm.
LASTMA officials, working alongside officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, rescued the victims and transported them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The damaged vehicle was later evacuated from the scene to ease traffic movement.
Commenting on the incident, Bakare-Oki condemned the use of mobile phones while driving, warning that distracted driving continues to endanger lives on Lagos roads.
He urged motorists to remain fully focused while driving, avoid using phones behind the wheel and strictly comply with speed limits and traffic safety regulations.
