Former Sergio Ramos is reportedly on the verge of completing a sensational takeover of Sevilla FC in a move that could see the legendary defender become the new owner of the Spanish club where his professional football journey first began.
According to reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the deal has already been agreed in principle, with only a few legal procedures and regulatory approvals remaining before the takeover can be officially announced.
The proposed acquisition is believed to be worth around €450 million and reportedly includes the assumption of Sevilla’s existing financial obligations and debts. Ramos is said to have led the negotiations alongside his brother and long-time representative, René Ramos, while investment fund partners are also understood to be involved in backing the transaction financially.
Romano revealed that the former Spain captain played a direct role in finalising the negotiations and was heavily involved in discussions leading up to the agreement.
“Sergio Ramos has completed the process to buy Sevilla and become the new club owner,” Romano stated while providing updates on the developing situation.
Reports from Spain also indicated that negotiations intensified earlier this week, with Ramos participating in extensive meetings that reportedly lasted more than 10 hours before decisive agreements were reached.
The potential takeover represents a remarkable full-circle moment in Ramos’ football career and personal connection with Sevilla. The veteran defender rose through Sevilla’s renowned youth academy before making his senior debut for the club in 2004. His performances quickly attracted national attention, leading to his high-profile transfer to Real Madrid in 2005.
During his legendary spell at Real Madrid, Ramos established himself as one of the greatest defenders in modern football history. He won multiple major trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles, several La Liga championships and FIFA Club World Cups while also captaining both club and country during some of the most successful periods of his career.
After leaving Madrid, Ramos spent time with Paris Saint-Germain before eventually returning to Sevilla for a brief second stint in 2024, rekindling his relationship with the club where it all began.
If the acquisition is finalised, Ramos would transition from club icon to executive leadership, joining a growing list of former football stars who have moved into club ownership and management after retirement or during the latter stages of their careers.
The proposed takeover, however, still requires approval from Spain’s regulatory authorities, including the Spanish Sports Council (CSD), before it can be formally completed.
As of now, Sevilla have not released an official statement regarding the reports, although multiple sources in Spain suggest the transaction is already in its final stages.
The development comes at a critical period for Sevilla, who have struggled with financial pressures, managerial instability and inconsistent performances in recent seasons despite their strong reputation in European football. The club, famous for its success in the UEFA Europa League, has faced growing challenges on and off the pitch, leading to increased calls for restructuring and fresh investment.
Many supporters believe Ramos’ deep emotional connection with Sevilla could help restore stability and ambition at the club, especially given his understanding of the institution’s culture, expectations and history.
The potential arrival of Ramos as owner is already generating major reactions across Spanish football, with fans and analysts closely watching what could become one of the most dramatic ownership transitions involving a former football superstar in recent years.
