Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to carry out a comprehensive electricity consumption audit across Ogun State as part of efforts to improve power supply and achieve round-the-clock electricity for residents and businesses.
The governor disclosed this during an inspection visit to the state’s 4-megawatt gas-powered Independent Power Plant in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
According to Abiodun, the planned audit will help the government determine the actual electricity needs of the state, monitor how generated power is distributed, and identify areas where leakages and energy theft occur.
The governor explained that the move became necessary following the state’s expanded authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.
He stressed that stable electricity remains one of the major foundations for economic growth, industrialisation, and investment attraction.
“What you see here behind me is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant currently generating four megawatts. It doesn’t get cleaner than this,” Abiodun said.
He added that the project reflects his administration’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to residents.
“We do not just make promises; we fulfil them without unnecessary noise,” the governor stated.
OGUN PUSHES FOR ENERGY SELF-SUFFICIENCY
The governor revealed that the 4-megawatt facility is part of the Ogun State Light-Up Project aimed at improving electricity supply across communities in the state.
He also disclosed that the state’s larger 34-megawatt power plant located in Onijanganjangan was designed with room for future expansion.
According to him, the government has already upgraded parts of the state’s power distribution infrastructure to support increased electricity generation and delivery.
Abiodun maintained that the administration’s long-term target is to ensure no community in the state remains underserved.
GOVERNMENT PLANS & REGULATION
The governor further announced that the newly established Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission will oversee electricity generation, transmission, and distribution activities within Ogun State.
He said the state is positioning itself as a major investment destination by improving infrastructure and ensuring reliable power supply.
“Our ultimate goal is to position Ogun State as the destination where investors are guaranteed a 24-hour power supply at the most affordable rates in Nigeria,” he said.
Abiodun also criticised outdated power facilities inherited from previous administrations, describing it as unacceptable for power plants to remain inactive for several years despite huge investments.
“You cannot compare this with some power plants that have been sitting idle for over 16 years,” he added.
The governor noted that improved electricity supply would support industries, businesses, and economic activities across the state.
He added that ongoing investments in the power sector are aimed at attracting more local and foreign investors while boosting industrial growth in Ogun State.
The administration, according to him, remains focused on sustainable development and modern energy solutions capable of supporting long-term economic expansion.
Ogun State’s latest move highlights the growing push by state governments to strengthen local power generation and reduce dependence on the national grid. With plans for a statewide electricity audit and expanded energy infrastructure, the government says it hopes to deliver stable and affordable electricity that can drive business growth and improve living conditions for residents.
