The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has distanced itself from a notice currently circulating over the conduct of primary elections for the upcoming local government elections.
The party described the document as unauthorised, misleading, and not issued by its recognised leadership in the state.
According to a public disclaimer released by the party, the notice titled “Notification of Conduct of Primaries for Local Government Elections in 17 LGAs and 260 Councillorship Wards, Pursuant to the Electoral Act 2026” did not originate from the official APC structure in Enugu.
The party stated that the document was not approved by the duly constituted state leadership headed by the chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, and therefore carries no legal standing.
In a statement signed by the state publicity secretary, Uche Obute, the APC stressed that those behind the notice had no mandate from either the National Working Committee (NWC) or the Enugu State Executive Committee to issue directives or organise primaries on behalf of the party.
The statement explained that the APC recognises only one State Executive Committee — the body duly constituted and affirmed by the National Working Committee — as the legitimate authority empowered to organise and conduct primary elections in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act 2026.
The party further warned that any primary election conducted on the strength of the disputed notice would be regarded as null, void, and without effect, adding that such an exercise would not be recognised by the APC or any lawful authority.
Party members, aspirants, and stakeholders were also advised to ignore the document and refrain from taking part in any activity connected to it.
The APC disclosed that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission as well as relevant security agencies had already been informed in order to prevent any unlawful actions arising from the development.
The party assured its members that an official timetable and detailed guidelines for the conduct of primaries would be communicated through authorised channels at the appropriate time.
The Enugu APC also reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, the rule of law, and a transparent electoral process.
