The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deepening the hardship facing Nigerians, saying the country urgently needs a new political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The position was made known on Monday by the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, during the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Wabara said the current economic and social realities in the country have left many Nigerians under immense pressure, adding that the opposition party believes there is growing public expectation for the PDP to regain strength and offer an alternative platform of leadership.
Wabara Says Nigerians Are Looking to the PDP
Addressing party leaders at the NEC meeting, Wabara stated that many citizens are looking to the PDP as a possible vehicle for political change.
According to him, millions of Nigerians are eager to see the opposition party regain its footing and return to the centre of national politics.
He argued that widespread economic hardship, rising living costs, and growing public frustration have created a national mood in which many citizens are seeking relief and renewed confidence in governance.
Wabara said the PDP must therefore rise to the occasion and reposition itself as a credible political force capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
‘Worst Kind of Hardship’
The PDP BoT chairman strongly criticised the APC-led administration, alleging that the ruling party has subjected Nigerians to severe hardship and prolonged suffering.
He said many citizens are struggling under difficult socio-economic conditions and argued that the current political environment has left millions of households facing increased pressure.
According to Wabara, the opposition believes that restoring public confidence in governance will require a stronger, more organised political alternative.
He maintained that the PDP remains hopeful that it can once again become the platform through which Nigerians can pursue change through the ballot in 2027.
Allegations of Attempts to Destabilise the PDP
Wabara also alleged that the ruling party has been working to weaken the opposition ahead of the next election cycle.
He claimed that some suspended members of the PDP had collaborated with external political forces in efforts aimed at destabilising the party’s internal structure.
According to him, there have been deliberate attempts to create confusion within the party and undermine its readiness ahead of future political contests.
He, however, insisted that despite the challenges, the PDP remains intact and capable of overcoming internal and external pressures.
Claims of Legal and Institutional Pressure
The PDP leader further alleged that certain individuals had pursued legal and institutional strategies designed to weaken the party.
He claimed that a series of litigations and political manoeuvres were initiated with the intention of creating distractions and affecting the party’s internal cohesion.
Wabara also raised concerns over what he described as attempts to use state institutions to place pressure on the opposition.
Despite those allegations, he said the party had continued to demonstrate resilience and remained committed to rebuilding its structures.
NEC Meeting Reflects Party’s Resilience
According to Wabara, the 103rd NEC meeting itself is evidence that the PDP still possesses the internal capacity to survive difficult political moments.
He noted that the party has continued to function despite recent leadership challenges and internal disagreements.
Political observers have described the NEC meeting as part of broader efforts by the opposition party to restore internal stability and strengthen its organisational base ahead of the next election cycle.
For the PDP leadership, the gathering represents an opportunity to consolidate unity, address outstanding internal issues, and chart a clearer political direction.
Call for Unity Among Party Members
Wabara used the occasion to appeal to party members to put aside personal ambitions and group interests in favour of collective rebuilding.
He urged loyal members of the party to embrace unity, discipline, and cooperation in order to reposition the PDP as a stronger opposition platform.
According to him, internal cohesion will be essential if the party intends to regain public trust and present itself as a viable alternative in 2027.
He stressed that only a united party would be able to effectively challenge the ruling APC in the next general elections.
‘Nigerians Have Reached Breaking Point’
Painting a bleak picture of the country’s current condition, Wabara said many Nigerians have reached a point of deep frustration.
He argued that widespread hardship has placed enormous strain on households and communities across the country.
According to him, the mood among citizens reflects growing dissatisfaction with current economic realities, particularly as inflation, rising living costs, and reduced purchasing power continue to affect daily life.
He maintained that these conditions have created a strong desire for political change among many voters.
PDP Eyes 2027 as Platform for Change
Wabara said the PDP must now focus on repositioning itself as the platform through which Nigerians can democratically express their desire for change in the 2027 elections.
He noted that the party’s immediate responsibility is to rebuild public confidence, strengthen its structures, and reconnect with citizens across the country.
According to him, the PDP must present itself not only as an opposition party but also as a credible national platform capable of offering practical governance solutions.
Steps Taken to Stabilise the Party
The BoT chairman also disclosed that the party has already taken steps to stabilise its internal structure following recent leadership challenges.
He said the PDP had embarked on wide consultations and convened the NEC meeting in line with constitutional provisions in order to strengthen internal legitimacy and organisational direction.
These measures, he explained, are part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring that the party enters the next political cycle on a more stable and united footing.
Rebuilding Ahead of the Next General Election
The latest NEC meeting comes at a time when the PDP is actively working to rebuild its leadership structure and consolidate its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
With political realignments already beginning to shape conversations around the 2027 elections, party leaders appear focused on restoring internal unity and preparing for future electoral contests.
Wabara expressed confidence that despite current challenges, the PDP would emerge stronger and remain a major force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He said the party’s efforts to rebuild would not be in vain and insisted that the PDP remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative in the years ahead.
