The family of late Nollywood comic actor John “Mr Ibu” Okafor has received ₦7.5 million in donations after his widow, Stella Okafor, publicly appealed for financial assistance, revealing the difficult conditions she and her children have been facing.
Stella recently disclosed that the family had been living without electricity for two months due to unpaid bills and that her children were sent home from school because of outstanding school fees.
Her emotional appeal attracted widespread support from Nigerians, with many donating money to help the family get back on their feet.
Confirming the donations, content creator King Mitchy announced on Instagram that a total of ₦7.5 million had been raised.
“Together, we were able to raise ₦7.5 million for the family. God bless everyone who donated,” Mitchy wrote.
According to her, the money will be used to pay the children’s school fees, including the eldest daughter’s WAEC registration, while part of the funds will also cover the family’s rent.
Mitchy revealed that she advised Stella to relocate to a more affordable apartment after discussing the family’s financial situation with her. She added that more details from their conversation would be shared later, noting that her main concern was ensuring the children received the support they needed.
The fundraising, however, also reignited an ongoing family dispute.
Mr Ibu’s third son, Somtochukwu Okafor, questioned the widow’s claims, alleging that she sold several of the late actor’s properties after his death.
Actor Fred “Tenkobo” Ebere also criticised Stella, accusing her of using Mr Ibu’s name to attract public sympathy and financial donations.
Despite the controversy, the successful fundraising has provided immediate financial relief for the late actor’s family.
