Popular Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham, has shared a motivational message on self-worth and positivity following recent criticism over her traditional way of greeting elders.
The actress took to her X page to encourage people not to drain themselves trying to seek validation from individuals who focus only on negativity.
“Never waste your energy trying to explain your value to people who only understand negativity,” she wrote.
Her post comes weeks after she sparked widespread reactions online following her appearance at the 70th birthday celebration of the father of socialite, Debola Lagos.
In a viral video from the event, Toyin was seen kneeling to greet businesswoman Shade Okoya and her husband as a sign of respect, a gesture that generated mixed opinions on social media.
While some praised her for upholding Yoruba cultural values, others criticised the act, describing it as unnecessary and performative.
Reacting to the backlash at the time, Toyin defended her actions, insisting that she remains proud of her upbringing and cultural heritage.
The actress described herself as a true Omoluabi, explaining that kneeling to greet elders is a value deeply rooted in her upbringing and something she intends to continue practising.
Responding to one critic who dismissed the gesture as “eye service,” Toyin expressed concern that many Nigerians now see respect for elders as outdated.
According to her, she was raised to honour older people through traditional greetings and believes such values should be preserved for future generations.
The actress also addressed reactions surrounding another public appearance involving Olori Sekinat Elegushi, where she was seen kneeling while speaking with the royal figure.
Defending the gesture, Toyin said not everyone would understand her personality or values, adding that she sees herself as someone who strongly believes in respect and tradition.
Over the years, Toyin Abraham has repeatedly spoken about the importance of preserving cultural identity, particularly Yoruba values centred on humility, respect and proper upbringing.
