Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has described the past year as a “crazy season” after confirming his return to Bayer Leverkusen following the end of his loan spell at Werder Bremen.
The Nigerian striker will head back to Leverkusen, where he still has two years left on his contract, after a difficult campaign marked by injuries and limited playing opportunities.
Boniface’s challenging season began after a proposed transfer to AC Milan collapsed last summer.
Following the failed move, Bayer Leverkusen — who were reportedly open to allowing him leave after former coach Erik ten Hag considered him surplus to requirements — sent the striker on loan to Werder Bremen to regain form and fitness.
The loan move, however, failed to produce the expected breakthrough as Boniface struggled to secure a regular starting place and mostly featured from the bench.
His problems deepened in December when he suffered a serious knee injury that later required surgery.
Although the Super Eagles star returned to full training last month, he did not make another competitive appearance before the season ended.
Werder Bremen confirmed ahead of Saturday’s final Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund that Boniface would return to Bayer Leverkusen after completing his loan stay at the club.
Reacting to the development, the 25-year-old expressed appreciation to the club’s supporters, teammates and officials in a message posted on X.
Boniface said the season had been eventful and difficult, but thanked everyone at the club for their support throughout his time in Bremen.
The striker now returns to Bayer Leverkusen with uncertainty surrounding his future after injuries disrupted the momentum he built during the club’s historic title-winning campaign two seasons ago.
He had initially returned to Leverkusen during his rehabilitation process before rejoining Werder Bremen after recovering fully from the injury.
