Central Eagles and Southern Sharks recorded impressive wins on Matchday Two of the Nigeria Super League at the TBS Cricket Oval on Sunday.
Central Eagles produced the most dramatic result of the tournament so far, edging Eastern Elephants by just one run in a tense encounter decided on the final delivery.
Batting first after being sent in, Central Eagles posted 157/4 in 20 overs, inspired by a brilliant innings from wicketkeeper-batsman Selim Salau.
Salau scored an outstanding 83 runs off 61 balls, smashing four boundaries and seven sixes to anchor the innings.
After the early loss of Happy Bagshaw, Mohammed Moshood and Emmanuel Boniface Oche steadied the innings before Useni Prosper added quick late runs with an unbeaten 22 off nine balls.
Eastern Elephants started their chase confidently through Paul Pam and Rahmon Ali, but disciplined bowling from Ifeanyi Uboh and Azeez Warees kept the contest balanced.
Ipoli Victor nearly pulled off a stunning comeback for the Elephants with a counter-attacking 52 off 35 balls, setting up a thrilling finish.
However, Central Eagles held their nerve in the closing stages, producing crucial run-outs to restrict Eastern Elephants to 156/9 and seal a narrow one-run victory.
Salau was named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock of 83.
In another game, Southern Sharks bounced back from their opening-day defeat with a dominant 48-run win over Western Dolphins.
After choosing to bat first, the Sharks piled up an impressive 176/7 in 20 overs.
Isesele Evangel starred with the bat, smashing 54 off 31 balls and hitting 11 boundaries in an aggressive innings.
Kenneth Boniface also impressed with a quickfire 47 from 25 deliveries, while Akhigbe Miracle contributed 28 runs.
Western Dolphins bowlers Udekwe Chiemelie and Monday Elijah claimed two wickets each, but failed to stop Southern Sharks from posting one of the tournament’s highest totals so far.
Chasing 177, Western Dolphins struggled after losing early wickets despite captain Vincent Adewoye scoring a rapid 35 off 21 balls.
Destiny Chilemanya and Udekwe Chiemelie attempted to revive the innings, but Southern Sharks remained firmly in control with the ball.
Ayeni Precious and Ismail Abdullahi picked up two wickets each, while Akhigbe Miracle delivered an impressive all-round performance as the Dolphins were bowled out for 128 in 16.4 overs.
Evangel earned the Player of the Match award following his explosive half-century and influential display for Southern Sharks.
