Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stated that winning trophies is the minimum expectation attached to managing Nigeria’s national team.
The Malian tactician made the declaration while outlining his plans and ambitions for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup in London and upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
According to Chelle, the pressure that comes with coaching Nigeria is enormous, but he remains fully prepared to deliver success for the country.
He explained that taking charge of the Super Eagles automatically comes with the responsibility to win trophies and meet the expectations of millions of football fans.
Chelle’s comments come amid reports linking him with vacant coaching positions in Africa and the French Ligue 1 following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the speculation, the coach insisted he remains committed to the Nigerian national team project.
Chelle Targets New Talents For Unity Cup
The Super Eagles coach said the upcoming Unity Cup in London will serve as an opportunity to assess emerging players and expand the national team squad.
Several uncapped and fringe players are expected to be considered for the competition, including Plymouth Argyle forward Owen Oseni, Pisa striker Rafiu Durosinmi, Hamburg winger Philip Otele, Dukla Prague midfielder Samson Tijani and Ikorodu City captain Tosin Oyedokun.
According to Chelle, Nigeria possesses an abundance of football talent, although not every player can feature at the same time.
He stressed that his focus is on selecting players who fit into his tactical philosophy and long-term vision of building one of the best national teams in football.
NPFL Players Under Consideration
Chelle also revealed that he personally attended Nigeria Premier Football League matches as part of efforts to monitor local talents ahead of his squad announcement.
The coach noted that several home-based players impressed him during the scouting process and confirmed that he has already made decisions regarding some call-ups.
According to him, watching players in live competitive situations allowed him to properly evaluate their quality and readiness for international football.
Injury Concerns Ahead Of Poland, Portugal Friendlies
Following the Unity Cup, Nigeria will face Poland and Portugal in high-profile friendly matches, where Chelle is expected to invite a stronger and more experienced squad.
However, the Super Eagles coach admitted that player availability may become a challenge because many foreign-based stars are expected to be on holiday after a demanding club season.
He explained that some players are also managing minor injuries and may require adequate rest before returning for international duty.
Chelle added that his current priority remains preparing the team for the Unity Cup before finalising plans for the June friendlies.
