The United States Department of State has launched a new online portal that allows members of the public to report suspected visa fraud and misuse.
The department said the platform provides a convenient channel for submitting information that could help authorities identify and investigate possible violations of US visa laws. The new reporting form can also be submitted anonymously. (Travel.state.gov)
According to the department, information provided by members of the public has helped authorities identify and hold accountable tens of thousands of people suspected of visa fraud during President Donald Trump’s second term.
The State Department said visa fraud can involve the use of falsified documents or travel plans, sham marriages arranged by brokers, shell companies, fabricated job offers, birth tourism and other schemes intended to obtain entry into the US through fraudulent means.
It warned that such activities could affect US communities, the economy, American workers, national security and public safety.
The department said its Bureau of Consular Affairs is strengthening efforts to detect and prevent visa fraud and misuse under the leadership of Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
People found to have violated US immigration or visa laws could face consequences including visa revocation and referral to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.
The department is asking members of the public who have information about suspected visa fraud or misuse to submit as much relevant information as possible through the new reporting platform.
The reporting system allows people to provide details about suspected fraud, with the department noting that more complete information can increase the chances of a successful investigation. (Travel.state.gov)
