Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has opened up about the silence of some friends, colleagues and associates during his current legal troubles, saying he has no bitterness toward anyone who has chosen not to support him.
In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” El-Rufai reflected on how difficult circumstances have changed his perspective on some of the relationships he has built over the years.
The former governor said he had previously stood by people close to him and supported causes he believed in, sometimes at considerable personal cost.
According to him, those decisions were made because he believed they were right, rather than because he expected appreciation or the same support in return.
El-Rufai acknowledged that some people who had expressed concern about his current situation had also questioned why certain individuals he previously supported had remained silent.
He said he does not intend to judge anyone for choosing to respond differently now that circumstances have changed.
“Adversity has a way of illuminating relationships,” El-Rufai said, adding that his experiences over the past few months may cause him to quietly reassess some relationships.
He stressed that such reflection should not be interpreted as an attack or condemnation of those individuals.
Instead, he said the experience had simply given him an opportunity to see people and life from a different perspective.
El-Rufai also made it clear that he does not regret the support he previously offered to friends, colleagues or causes he believed in.
“I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.
The former governor said he would also not seek revenge over any injustice, ingratitude or injury he believes he may have suffered.
He said he would leave ultimate judgment to Almighty Allah while focusing on remaining faithful to his conscience and personal principles.
El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings over allegations connected to his time as Kaduna governor. He has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Concluding his message, the former governor said everyone would eventually have to live with the choices they make, while history would ultimately judge their actions.
For El-Rufai, he said, his priority is maintaining peace with his conscience and his faith.
