Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has reminded police officers that their duty is to serve and protect Nigerians, not exploit them.
Aliyu gave the warning after concluding a statewide familiarisation and operational tour of area commands across Bauchi State. He urged personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline and respect for the rights of citizens.
The commissioner concluded the tour with a visit to the Metro Area Command in Bauchi metropolis, where he was received by the area commander, chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Divisional Police Officers, representatives of quasi-security organisations and other community stakeholders.
Addressing officers at the command, Aliyu reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, that policing must remain professional, people-oriented and respectful of human rights.
He also sensitised personnel on the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy and warned against extortion, prolonged detention of suspects, torture, arbitrary arrests and partisan conduct, particularly during electioneering periods.
“We are paid with citizens’ tax to serve, not to exploit. We are employed to protect, not to torment.
Avoid arbitrary arrest.”
Aliyu urged officers to maintain discipline, punctuality, courtesy and prompt responses to distress calls. He also stressed the need for personnel to maintain proper appearance and ensure that their working environments reflect the standards expected of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the commissioner, professionalism and public trust are essential to effective policing, stressing that officers must conduct themselves in ways that strengthen citizens’ confidence in the Force.
On security within Bauchi metropolis, Aliyu directed the leadership of the Metro Area Command to improve intelligence gathering, maintain visibility patrols and strengthen cooperation with other security agencies and residents.
He said the collaboration was necessary to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery and other forms of criminality in the metropolis under Operation Velvet.
The commissioner also inspected facilities within the command, commended the personnel for maintaining clean and orderly working environments, and listened to their operational and welfare concerns.
He assured the officers that the issues raised during the engagement would be addressed to improve their working conditions, performance and morale.
With the visit to the Metro Area Command, Aliyu completed his familiarisation tour of all Area Commands across Bauchi State.
The commissioner thanked personnel for their dedication to duty and urged residents to continue supporting the police and other security agencies in efforts to build a safer Bauchi State.
