The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency bye-election.
The election became necessary following the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who represented the constituency in the House of Representatives.
In a statement signed by Public Affairs Officer Mohorret Bigun on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC said the bye-election would be conducted in accordance with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the Electoral Act.
According to the timetable, INEC will publish the Notice of Election on August 20, 2026, while political parties intending to contest the vacant seat are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and August 25.
The final list of nominated candidates will be published on September 8, with official campaigns scheduled to begin on September 9 and end on September 17.
INEC urged all participating political parties to follow the timetable strictly and ensure that their activities comply with the law.
The electoral body also assured stakeholders of its readiness to conduct a free, fair and inclusive election, promising a level playing field for all participating parties and candidates.
The election will cover 903 Polling Units, 31 Registration Areas and three Local Government Areas within the federal constituency.
