FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate demolition of houses and other structures obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas of Abuja.
Wike gave the directive on Tuesday after inspecting areas affected by recent flooding in Maitama.
The minister said the demolition would begin immediately and continue until Saturday, regardless of ongoing political activities or the identity of the owners of the affected properties.
According to him, structures built on or obstructing waterways and drainage channels must be removed to improve the flow of stormwater and address the causes of recurring flooding in the capital.
The directive follows heavy rainfall that recently caused flooding in parts of Abuja, leaving residents stranded and vehicles submerged.
Wike said the government would not allow political considerations or the status of property owners to prevent actions necessary to protect lives and property.
The demolition exercise is expected to cover buildings and other structures obstructing natural waterways and drainage channels in Maitama and other flood-prone parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
