Cristiano Ronaldo has given his strongest indication yet that his professional football career could be nearing its end, saying 2026 will “probably” be his final year in the sport.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain made the revelation in an interview with Vogue published on Sunday, saying he wants to leave what he described as a “spectacular legacy” when he eventually retires.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo, who has scored more than 950 goals for club and country, said he already has plans for life after football and hopes to keep himself busy through activities including travelling and playing padel.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward said football could leave a significant gap in his life after retirement, making it important to have other interests to occupy his time.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
Ronaldo also reflected on the sacrifices behind his career, saying he wants to enjoy what he has achieved after spending about 25 years at the highest level.
The Portugal star is expected to continue playing for Al Nassr during the new Saudi Pro League season, despite his latest retirement hint.
His comments do not amount to a definitive retirement announcement, but they represent his clearest indication so far that his playing career could end after the 2026-27 season.
