Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day across the state to allow residents to participate in the forthcoming local government council elections.
The declaration covers civil and public servants at the local, state and federal levels, as well as workers in the banking sector.
The state government said the decision followed the announcement by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) that the local government elections would hold on Monday.
According to the government, the work-free day is intended to give eligible voters enough opportunity to exercise their constitutional right without being hindered by official duties.
Workers providing essential services are, however, exempted from the declaration.
The government urged residents to come out peacefully and participate in the elections while obeying the law and maintaining responsible conduct before, during and after the exercise.
Governor Mohammed also called on citizens to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
He wished the people of Bauchi State a successful local government election.
