Afrobeats superstar Davido has alleged that soldiers attempted to prevent him from entering Osun State as residents headed to the polls for Saturday’s governorship election.
The singer made the claim in a post on his verified X account early Saturday, saying he had received information that soldiers were trying to block his access to the state.
“I’ve been reliably informed that soldiers are trying to prevent me from entering Osun tomorrow, this won’t happen.”
Davido also argued that every Nigerian has the right to move freely, but the allegation comes amid a movement restriction already announced by the security agencies for the election.
The Nigeria Police Force had announced that vehicular movement across Osun State would be restricted from midnight on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and secure election.
Thousands of security personnel have been deployed across the state as voters prepare to choose their next governor.
Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, is a nephew of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke and has actively supported his uncle’s re-election campaign under the Accord Party.
The governor is seeking a second term and is facing challengers including APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji.
Davido’s allegation has generated reactions online, with some users questioning whether the reported attempt to stop him was specifically targeted, while others linked the development to the general movement restrictions imposed for election day.
Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad, however, dismissed Davido’s complaint as “dramatic”, pointing out that the restriction had already been publicly announced as part of the election security arrangements.
“The right to freedom of movement does not mean ignoring lawful security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful and credible election,” Ahmad wrote.
As voting begins across Osun, attention remains focused on the enforcement of the movement restriction and the ability of security agencies to maintain a peaceful electoral environment.
