As Osun State prepares for Saturday’s governorship election, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged residents to turn out and vote for the candidates of their choice, assuring them that security measures have been put in place.
Akpabio made the call on Thursday during the APC mega rally in Osogbo, where he appealed to voters to make their decisions wisely and avoid being intimidated.
‘Go out and vote’
Addressing residents, Akpabio encouraged them to participate in the election and stressed that social media arguments should not stop anyone from visiting their polling units.
“Feel free to go out and vote for the candidate of your party, the party of your choice.”
He also urged voters to remain calm and peaceful, particularly when faced with provocative comments online.
According to the Senate President, President Bola Tinubu has directed that adequate security be provided across the state to ensure voters can cast their ballots without harassment or intimidation.
Akpabio appeals for peaceful election
Akpabio said there was no reason for violence during the election and urged Osun residents to exercise restraint regardless of political disagreements.
The APC rally attracted several senior party figures, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
Tight contest expected
The appeal comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking another term, while APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji is among the major contenders.
With 15 candidates on the ballot across Osun’s 30 local government areas, more than 25,000 security personnel have reportedly been deployed for the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also said preparations for the poll are on course.
With tensions running high in some quarters, the focus is now on whether Saturday’s election will live up to Akpabio’s call for a peaceful and credible exercise.
