Basketball has lost one of its most influential figures. Don Nelson, the former NBA champion player and legendary coach who helped shape the modern game, has died at the age of 86.
Nelson’s family announced his death on Sunday, bringing to an end the career of a basketball figure whose influence stretched across nearly five decades.
As a player, Nelson spent 11 seasons with the Boston Celtics from 1966 to 1976, winning five NBA championships. His contributions to the franchise were later honoured when the Celtics retired his No. 19 jersey.
Nelson went on to build an equally remarkable career on the sidelines, coaching in the NBA from 1976 to 2010 with the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.
He finished his coaching career with a 1,335–1,063 record, which stood as the NBA’s coaching wins record until Gregg Popovich surpassed him in 2022.
NBA Remembers Coaching Pioneer
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described Nelson as a coach who transformed the game through his willingness to challenge conventional ideas.
“Don Nelson revolutionized NBA basketball through his fearlessness, ingenuity and deep conviction,” Silver said.
He noted that Nelson spent almost 50 years in the NBA, winning five championships as a player before establishing himself as one of the league’s most innovative coaches.
Nelson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Although he never reached the NBA Finals as a head coach, his influence on the sport earned him a lasting place among basketball’s most respected coaches.
Warriors Pay Tribute to ‘Nellie’
The Golden State Warriors mourned Nelson’s death, describing him as one of the most innovative and influential coaches in NBA history.
The franchise said Nelson’s authenticity, personality and passion for basketball made him an iconic figure in Warriors history.
Current Warriors coach Steve Kerr also remembered Nelson as a visionary whose ideas continue to influence the modern NBA.
“Don Nelson was a true innovator whose influence on the game of basketball is still felt today,” Kerr said.
He added that Nelson consistently challenged conventional thinking, experimented with different lineups and styles and identified possibilities that others often overlooked.
“So much of what is now commonplace in the modern NBA can be traced back to the way Nellie approached the game.”
Celtics Honour Five-Time Champion
Boston Celtics also paid tribute to Nelson’s contribution as a player, remembering him as a tough and dependable all-around player who played an important role in five championship-winning teams.
The Celtics highlighted his ability to understand the game and his contribution during his 11 seasons with the franchise.
Nelson’s first coaching opportunity came with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he spent 11 seasons between 1976 and 1987.
The Bucks said Nelson won two of his three NBA Coach of the Year awards during his time with the team and established himself as one of basketball’s most innovative and visionary leaders.
The Dallas Mavericks also described Nelson as an innovator and legend whose influence on the franchise and the wider game would never be forgotten.
From his five championship rings as a Celtics player to his groundbreaking coaching career, Nelson leaves behind a legacy that continues to influence the NBA.
