The Traditional Rulers Council of Bende South State Constituency (Ikwuisi) has endorsed the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, for a third term in office, dismissing claims that the Bende Federal Constituency seat is subject to any zoning arrangement.
The royal fathers made their position known during a meeting with the Deputy Speaker, led by the Chairman of the Council, Eze Uchendu Okorie (Ekwo II of Akaekwo Uzuakoli).
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Eze Okorie praised Kalu’s legislative achievements and developmental projects across the constituency, describing his representation as outstanding.
According to him, the people of Bende are satisfied with Kalu’s performance and want him to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections.
“All of us here, in one voice, are saying you should go for a third term. We are solidly behind you. Whoever is contesting against you is challenging efficiency and competence. You have done well and we are proud of you,” the monarch said.
The traditional rulers also commended Kalu for his constituency projects, effective legislative oversight and efforts in attracting federal projects and development to Bende.
Addressing the controversy surrounding zoning, Eze P.C. Onyegbu insisted that there has never been any formal agreement zoning the House of Representatives seat in Bende.
He argued that Kalu’s performance had surpassed that of previous representatives of the constituency.
“The issue of zoning has always been distorted. Of all those who have represented Bende in the House of Representatives, none has surpassed what Benjamin Kalu has done,” he said.
Onyegbu added that Kalu’s position as Deputy Speaker has brought significant benefits not only to Bende but also to Abia State, the South-East, and the wider Igbo nation.
Also speaking, Eze Patrick Udeh of Bende praised Kalu’s leadership, urging anyone seeking to challenge him politically to first demonstrate comparable achievements.
Responding to the endorsement, Kalu thanked the traditional rulers for their confidence and support, attributing his achievements to the prayers and cooperation of the people.
The Deputy Speaker highlighted several projects attracted to the constituency in the areas of infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment and women’s empowerment.
“I remain committed to providing quality representation, attracting more development projects and ensuring that Bende continues to enjoy the benefits of effective leadership. By the grace of God, the best is still ahead of us,” Kalu said.
He assured the traditional rulers that he would continue working to attract more development projects and deliver effective representation if re-elected.
