Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has cautioned politicians against exploiting insecurity and the killing of innocent citizens for political advantage, insisting that the protection of lives must remain above partisan interests.
The governor made the remark on Saturday during the 2026 Yaumul Shukur (Thanksgiving Day) celebration, an annual event marking the 1934 merger of the former Katsina and Daura Provinces.
Addressing participants at the gathering, Radda stressed that tackling insecurity is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of government, security agencies and citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
“No one should use the death of innocent people to chase power. Human life is sacred. Security must come first,” the governor said.
He explained that Yaumul Shukur was established by the state’s founding fathers as a day to thank Almighty Allah for His blessings and pray for lasting peace and prosperity in Katsina State.
“This is not just a gathering. It is a tradition of gratitude set by our founding fathers. That is why we mark August 1 every year as Yaumul Shukur, to thank Allah and seek His protection for our state,” Radda said.
The governor described Katsina as a state blessed with notable sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in leadership, the judiciary and public service.
He paid tribute to former Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as respected jurists including Justice Muhammadu Bello, Justice Mamman Nasir and Justice Umaru Abdullahi, for their contributions to the state and the nation.
Speaking on security, Radda said his administration had strengthened efforts to combat banditry through the establishment of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, which works alongside conventional security agencies.
“We have recruited, trained and equipped the Katsina State Community Watch Corps to support conventional security agencies. We will use every lawful means to protect lives and property,” he stated.
The governor also commended the military, police and members of the Community Watch Corps for their recent joint operations, which he said led to the elimination of more than 40 bandits, including a notorious kingpin.
He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders and residents to continue praying for peace, credible elections and sustainable development across the state.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Ishaq Shehu Dabai, and the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Khadi Ahmed Muhammad, described Yaumul Shukur as an opportunity to express gratitude to God while encouraging public support for government efforts in security and social welfare.
Also speaking, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruk Umar, called on residents to preserve the long-standing values of unity and brotherhood inherited from the founding fathers of Katsina and Daura.
The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers and other dignitaries from across the state.
